Cleaning lead from pistol bore

Recommended Posts

I shoot cast bullets in my pistols and usually get mild leading, which needs to be cleaned from the barrel. After much experimentation I have found a simple and very effective way to clean lead from the bore.

Simply spray penetrating oil/fluid (I use Royal Purple syn) in the bore and let site over night. Then next day simply clamp the barrel in your non-marring vise and run a jag of bronze wool through the barrel a few times. Why bronze wool? Because it's much softer than barrel steel, even stainless. The worst leading I've seen will wipe out in no time.

A little hoppes 9 (the real stuff before the EPA) and above works well.

I have a quart bottle of Hoppe's circa 1988 and it is post-EPA but back then I bought a bottle of nitrobenzene and added a few ounces to the No. 9 to make it the real thing.

I wish I knew where I could get a quart of nitrobenzene today for this very purpose. Somewhere in my house I may have the remainder of that original bottle...
