Mossberg model M44US .22 cal rifle

My great uncle gave me this rifle before he passed. I've only shot it a couple times and really don't know anything about the rifle. I wondered what the history is behind the 44US so I did a Google search and found this website. I found that it was made for the US military during and post WWII ('43-'46). I have never heard of a "lead lapped" barrel. It has a Weaver J4 scope which is in good condition. When the scope was mounted the front post sight was machined off leaving the dovetail, the rear sight is gone. sick

The gun's history has piqued my curiosity, so I think I'll spend some time at the range with it to see how well it shoots.
